To Forgive

ForgiveI’m walking away
Hands in pockets
Waiting for you
To call me back
To tell me you’re sorry
To let me forgive you
Because I want to
I want to open my arms
And fold you back in
Where you perfectly fit
But you never turn
You never admit
That you’re vulnerable
That I could hurt you
Just like you’re hurting me
Like this twisted knife
Digging deeper in
Coming up with marrow
And a sense of regret
A curious understanding
Of my displacement
But you never turn
And I forget your face
I fill in the empty space
I wonder where I’d be
If you had acknowledged me
But I’m still walking
Exorcising demons
In the footsteps
Slow and steady
As I count not to forget
But to forgive.
