depression_woman_640The signs were there
Sullen and discordant
Wrapped up in disdain
Holding on to the pain
Like it’s her salvation
Her answer to prayers
That were never sent

Then she pushes me away
Somebody to shove
A counterpoint for rage
Like a rat in a cage
I wait for it to subside
For the hard ride to end
And leave her whole

The days blur and slide
Edging into her view
Red-laced and betrayed
All the promises made
Then discarded in time
This preoccupied girl
Lost in translation

Yes, the signs were there
But only she read them
As she passed on the road
Like deciphering a code
Marginal at best
She looks behind her at the rain
That she will never see again.
